Questions and Answers that all Students should know before Arriving to UEA.
-
Can I use my electronic devices in the United
Kingdom?
No, the voltage is different, here they use 240
Volts and in Mexico and the US we use 120 Volts. Only if
your device can handle both voltages (e.g. laptops) you
will be able to use it, provided you buy an UK adapter.
-
Can I take mi
television, VHS and/or DVD player?
No, there are two reasons. First, the voltage is different as
explained in point 1. Second, the video system in the UK is PAL
while the system in most of America is NTSC, they are not
compatible between each other. Do you want a bit more of information
on this, click on one of the following links:
-
Is television
programming free such as in Mexico and the US?
No, here you have to pay an annual license fee of 131.50
British pounds in order to be able to use a television.
If they catch you using a TV without a license they can
fine you up to 1,000 British pounds. This money is used
to pay for the programs produced/seen in the BBC.
-
If I don't have British
pounds with me, where can I exchange my money?
Preferably exchange your money in your home airport or
bank because you will be given more pounds for your money.
Avoid changing you money from pesos to dollars and then
exchange them here in the UK because you will pay commission
and you will loose money with the exchange rates. Of course
if you want to bring traveller's checks for your
protection you will be charged commission regardless of where
you exchange them and the rate is not very good.
-
I will be arriving late
to UEA and I have accommodation, should I call the Accommodation
Office to advise them?
Yes, please do so. They work up to 5:00 pm sharp. In
general the Accommodation Office is not very complacent
and if you don't call them; they might leave you without
a key to your room. You definitely will not be able to pass
the night in the cold and will have to stay in a hotel
room.
-
Is there a special visa
for my entry to the United Kingdom?
Yes. The UK government has been changing regulations
and we strongly recommend you go to the UK Embassy in Mexico
City (or nearest consulate) and obtain a student visa. Make
sure it is for the full duration of your studies in the
UK, contemplate spending four years if you're doing a PhD.
This is a new situation so do not let unaware consuls tell
you that you do not need the visa. The cost is £85.
